Yamaguchi, Suo-Oshima, and the Roots of Koboji’s Legacy
Many Japanese immigrants to Hawaii trace their roots to Yamaguchi Prefecture, a region with deep cultural and historical ties to the islands. These connections are so profound that Yamaguchi and Hawaii share a sister-state relationship and there is a Museum of Japanese Immigration to Hawaii in Suo-Oshima. Among these immigrants was a young Kakuo Okimura, Koboji’s first chief priest, who hailed from Yuu-mura, Yamaguchi.
Located in the Seto Inland Sea, Suo-Oshima is an island rich in history and deeply connected to Hawaii and Kobo Daishi’s legacy. Historically, it served as a key stop for ships traveling between Japan and China. Legends of Kobo Daishi abound in Suo-Oshima, reflecting the region’s enduring faith in his teachings. The island is also home to the Oshima 88 Pilgrimage Sites.
At a young age, Kakuo Okimura had a transformative religious experience at Temple #73 of the Oshima 88 Pilgrimage Sites. This profound moment shaped his spiritual path and legacy. In 1993, Rev. Eisho Okimura and Rev. Dean Zenei Okimura led a pilgrimage to Suo-Oshima, retracing the footsteps of their predecessors to this sacred site. Thirty years later, Zennoh and Rev. Keia Kawanishi continued this tradition, further strengthening the bonds between Koboji and Suo-Oshima.
