As we look toward a new year, we naturally think about our hopes for ourselves and those we love. We wish for good health, safety, happiness, and the strength to overcome whatever difficulties may come our way.

In Shingon Buddhism, these hopes find expression in Hoshi Matsuri (星祭り), or the Star Festival, an annual tradition of prayers for protection and good fortune.

What Is Hoshi Matsuri?

Hoshi Matsuri is a traditional Buddhist observance associated with the teachings of Kōbō Daishi. Since ancient times, people have looked to the heavens to understand the changing fortunes of life. In the Shingon tradition, each person is associated with one of nine celestial stars, known as the Kuyōsei (九曜星).

According to traditional belief, our governing star changes with age, bringing different fortunes each year. Some stars are considered favorable, while others are associated with challenges or misfortune.

Turning Misfortune Into Blessings

In Buddhism, our lives are shaped by many causes and conditions. Although we cannot always control what happens, we can cultivate the wisdom and compassion with which we respond.

A traditional Buddhist expression, 転禍為福 (tenka ifuku), means "turning misfortune into blessings."

Each year at Koboji, we perform the sacred Goma fire ritual and offer prayers for those who have requested them. For those whose stars are unfavorable, we pray for protection from illness, accidents, and misfortune. For those whose stars are favorable, we pray that their blessings may continue to grow.

Through these prayers, we seek three important blessings: protection, increased blessings, and long life.

Individual Omamori

For generations, families in Hawaiʻi have requested Hoshi Matsuri prayers for parents, children, grandchildren, and other loved ones. Each person requesting prayers receives a special Hoshi Omamori, bearing their name, age, and star. These omamori are carefully prepared and blessed during the Hoshi Matsuri Goma service.

2027 Hoshi Matsuri at Koboji

Koboji will conduct its annual Hoshi Matsuri service in February 2027.

Hoshi Matsuri request forms, together with the 2027 star and fortune chart, will be mailed to Koboji members in November 2026. The chart will help families identify their stars and select the appropriate prayers and omamori.

Those interested in learning more or requesting prayers may contact the temple at (808) 841-7033 or office@koboji.org.
