Hoshi Matsuri & Hoshi Omamori
星祭り・星御守
Prayers for Protection, Good Fortune, and Well-Being
What Is Hoshi Matsuri?
For generations, families in Hawaiʻi have gathered in prayer through Hoshi Matsuri (星祭り), or the Star Festival, a traditional Shingon Buddhist observance dedicated to seeking protection and blessings for the coming year.
At Koboji, we continue this tradition by offering prayers for ourselves, our families, and those we love, asking for the compassionate guidance of Kōbō Daishi as we face the changing circumstances of life.
In the Shingon Buddhist tradition transmitted by Kōbō Daishi, each person is associated with nine celestial stars, known as Kuyōsei (九曜星).
According to traditional belief, our governing star changes as we grow older, bringing different fortunes each year. Some stars are considered favorable, while others may indicate challenges or misfortune.
During Hoshi Matsuri, Koboji conducts a sacred Goma fire ceremony and offers prayers on behalf of those who have requested them.
For those with unfavorable stars, we pray for protection from illness, accidents, and misfortune. For those with favorable stars, we pray that their blessings may continue to grow.
These prayers reflect the Buddhist expression 転禍為福 (tenka ifuku), meaning turning misfortune into blessings.
Although we cannot always control what life brings, through prayer and Buddhist practice, we seek the wisdom, protection, and strength to meet each day.
