Yakudoshi

The yakudoshi year is known to be unlucky because one’s astrological star will be at its dark stage of cycle. That is why yakudoshi blessings are performed at a temple so that unlucky karma does not overshadow a person’s life. The person is shielded by the blessing protecting them during the yakudoshi period.

Yakudoshi blessings are held throughout the year at the temple where special prayers are said for the individual. Many families chose to combine a blessing with yakudoshi party held in the downstairs hall with bentos and drinks. The sharing of food and drinks is a common Hawaii tradition that dates to the plantation era.

Kanreki

Kanreki is a special celebration held on a person’s 60th birthday. This is when the oriental zodiac sign makes a
complete cycle. The kanreki person marks his or her rebirth where the zodiac sign becomes the same as when
they were born. The kanreki is a yakudoshi and also an oiwai, which is a happy celebration.

Yakudoshi Omamori

Yakudoshi omamori are provided at yakudoshi blessings. Special omamori can also be requested for yakudoshi protection separate from a blessing service.
